The Art Association of Sanford-Springvale was formally organized in June of 1994 with the purpose to unite area artists wishing to promote, foster, and pursue the arts in this area. The initial group was brought together by Anne Marie Therrien. With some 20 original members it grew to over 80 members by 1998. For business purposes, the organization became known as the Sanford Art Association (SAA).
In the summer of 1995, SAA was granted permission to use an empty store front on Maine St. in Sanford, Maine, to display our works of art. By November 1995, we were given permission to use the entire premises and have our own Gallery. Since Fleet Bank gave us the opportunity to use this rent free and heated space, The Fleet Gallery seemed an appropriate name.
In 2007, we received our 501(c)(3) non-profit status from the IRS. From 2007 to 2018, SAA leased space next to City Hall with window exposure on two sides. In 2018, we closed the gallery and began concentrating on participation in art shows and workshops at various venues from Lebanon to Waterboro.
